Yoga Vasishta - Post 34

Even as the king Viduratha entered the ranks of the enemy, there was an intense tuttut sound of intense crossfire. As the missiles collided, there were sounds like khutkhut, tuktuk, jhunjhun.

THE SECOND LILA asked Sarasvati:

O Goddess, please tell me, why is it that though we are blessed by you, my husband cannot win the battle?

SARASVATI replied:

No doubt, I was adored by king Viduratha for a considerable time; but he did not pray for victory in battle. Being the consciousness that dwells in the understanding of every person, I bestow upon that person that which he seeks. Whatever it be that a person asks of me, I bestow upon him that fruit: it is but natural that fire gives you heat. He had asked for liberation; and he shall attain liberation.

On the other hand, the king of Sindhu worshipped me, and prayed for victory in battle. Hence, the king Viduratha will be slain in battle, and he will rejoin you both and in course of time will attain liberation. This king of Sindhu will win the war and will rule the country as the victorious monarch.

VASISTHA continued:

Both the kings lost their vehicles, and they continued to fight standing on the ground. As Viduratha was about to ascend a new one he was cut down by the king of  Sindhu. Viduratha's body was soon brought to the palace which the pursuing enemy could not enter on account of Sarasvati's presence.

VASISTHA  continued:

Seeing Viduratha fall, the second Lila fell down unconscious. The first Lila said to Sarasvati: ''O Goddess, see, this my husband is about to give up the ghost."

SARASVATI said:

Dear one, all this terrible war, this destruction and death, are as real as a dream; for there is neither a kingdom nor the earth. All this took place in the house of the holy man Vasistha on top of the hill. This palace and this battlefield and all the rest of it is nowhere but the inner apartments of your own palace.

In fact, the entire universe is there. For, within the house of the holy man is the world of the king Padma; and within the palace of that king in that world is all that you have seen here. All this is mere fancy, hallucination. What is, is the sole reality—which is neither created nor destroyed.

It is that infinite consciousness that is perceived by the ignorant as the Universe Just as a whole city exists within the dreamer, the three worlds exist in a small atom; surely, there are atoms in those worlds, and each one of those atoms also contains the three worlds.

The other Lila who fell down unconscious has already reached that world in which your husband Padma's body is lying.

LILA asked:

O Goddess, tell me: how did she go there already, and what are the people there telling her?

SARASVATI replied: Just as both of you are the fancied objects of the king, even so the king himself and I are dream objects. One who knows this gives up looking for 'objects of perception'. In the infinite consciousness we have created each other in our fancy.

The other youthful Lila was indeed yourself. She  worshipped me and prayed that she would never be widowed: hence, before the king Viduratha died she left this place. Dear one, you are all individualised cosmic consciousness, but I am the cosmic consciousness: and  I make all these things happen.

Sri Sathya Sai Baba

Cultivate The Conscious Of The One

Krishna is named Yogeeshwara in the Geetha. What does that mean? Yoga is defined by Pathanjali as the nirodha (control) of the vritthis (agitations) of the chiththa (mind-stuff). If the mind is stilled and free from waves produced by the wind of desire, then he becomes a Yogi and the Lord is the highest Yogi, for He is the ocean that is unaffected by the waves which agitate the surface. Krishna danced on the hood of the serpent Kaliya and forced it to vomit its poison, it is said. This is only another way of saying that he forced sensual desires to divest themselves of pernicious effects. Yoga of this type is the best means of attaining the Yogeeshwara (the Lord ofyogis); not breath control, but sense control is the prescription. Transcend anekathwa bhava (the consciousness of the many) and cultivate ekathwa bhava (the consciousness of the One), that will end strife, grief, pain and pride. See all as but expressions of the same God, as appearances on the same screen, as bulbs lit by the same current, though of manifold colours and wattage.

Feel that you and they are able to talk and walk, think and act because of the God within. Differences that strike you while you cast your eyes are illusory; you have not yet developed the vision that makes you apprehend the unity which is the truth of all the seeming diversity,  that is all! The fault is in you, not the world. The world is One; but, each takes it to mean what pleases him most! The world is One, but, each sees it from his own angle and so, it appears as if it has multiple faces.

Yoga Vasishta - Post 33

Saraswati continued:— Know Leela, that this Viduratha, your husband, will lose his life in this battlefield and his soul will return to the tomb in the inner apartment where it will resume its former state.

Vasishta:—  Upon hearing these words of the goddess, the second Leela, who was standing by, bent herself lowly before the goddess and addressed her with her folded palms.  The second Leela said, “Goddess! the genius of intelligence is ever adored by me and she gives me her visits in my nightly dreams.  I find you here exactly of her likeness. Therefore give me your blessing, O goddess with the beautiful face.”

Vasishta said:— The goddess, being addressed by the lady in this way, remembered her faith and reliance in her, then politely spoke to the lady standing as a suppliant before her.  The goddess said, “I am pleased, my child, with your unfailing and undiminished adoration of me all your lifetime. Now say what you want of me.”

The second Leela said, “Ordain O goddess, that with this body of mine I may accompany my husband to whatever place he is destined to go after his death in the war.”

The goddess replied, “Be it so my child who has worshipped me with flowers, incense and offerings with all diligence and without fail.”

Vasishta said:— The second Leela was cheered by this blessing of the goddess. The first Leela was much puzzled in her mind at the difference between their states.  The first Leela said, “Those who desire truth and they whose desires lean towards godliness have all their wishes fulfilled without delay and fail.

Then tell me, goddess, why could I not keep company with my brahmin husband with my body of the brahmani, but had to be taken to him in the mountain home after my death.”

The goddess answered saying:— Know, O excellent lady, that I have no power to do anything. Everything happens according to the desire of the living being. Know me only as the presiding divinity of wisdom, and I reveal everything according to my knowledge of it. It is by virtue of the intellectual powers exhibited in every being that it attains its particular end.

Rama said, “Tell me what Viduratha did after he got angry and left the ladies and the goddess having said what he did, and went out from the camp.”

Vasishta said:— Viduratha, accompanied by a large group of his companions, left his camp like the bright moon beset by a host of stars. He was in armor and girt by laces and girdles. Dressed in his military clothing, he went forth amidst the loud war cry sorrow to the vanquished like God Indra going to battle. He gave orders to the soldiers and was informed of the battle array.

The iron hoops of its wheels flashed with their golden pegs, and the long and beautiful shaft of the car, rang with the tinkling of pearls which were suspended to it. It was drawn by long necked, swift and slender horses of the best breed and auspicious marks. Their swiftness and bearing made them seem like they were flying in the air pulling a heavenly car with some god in it.

Viduratha collected his forces and, without considering the enemy’s superiority, pressed himself forward into them, as the great Mount Meru rushed into the waters of the great deluge.

Two edged saws pierced the bodies of the warriors, and the flinging weapons hurtled in the air, clashing and crashing each other.  The darkness of the night was put to flight by the blaze of the weapons. The entire army was pierced by arrows sticking like hairs on their bodies.

The fighting was stern without a cry or noise, like the pouring of rain in a breezeless sky. The glitter of swords in the darkened air was like the flashes of forked lightning in murky clouds. Darts were flying about with a hissing noise. Crowbars hit one another with a harsh sound. Large weapons struck each another with a jarring noise. The dreadful war raged direfully in the dim darkness of the night.
