SRI RAMA

Dear All,

On this auspicious day of Sri Rama Navami, let us immerse in the essence of Sri Rama, as given by Swami Sivananda.

Also, each Sai devotee must take up reading of Rama Katha Rasa Vahini which has been given to us by none other than Sri Rama Himself, re-incarnated as Sri Sathya Sai in this Kali Yuga.

Swami, as though writing His own biography of His previous incarnation, has given so many things in this precious book which are nowhere to be found in any other exposition of Ramayana.

The Author used to get into silence for almost the whole day when he used to read  this precious book. One para would take him to utmost silence and intense contemplation on how glorious that era would have been, how blessed mankind would be in that Rama Rajya!!! Glimpses from this book was shared while learning the Bhajan "Parama Dayalo Sai Ram" in Sai Sadan, Muscat.

Sri Rama

By

Sri Swami Sivananda

Rama was Lord Hari Himself incarnate on earth for the destruction of Ravana. He was well accomplished, beautiful and endowed with royal marks. He was the foremost of those who were skilled in the use of bows and arrows. He was born of the Ikshvaku line. He had his sway all over the world.

He had eyes like lotus-petals and a countenance like the full moon. His arms were long and beautiful. He had broad shoulders. His eyes were red. He had a deep voice. He had proportionate limbs. His gait was slow and majestic. It was like that of a lion. He had four lines on his thumb. He had a pointed nose. He had a high forehead.

His glory and powers were unlimited. He was peerless on earth. He was free from malice. He was gentle and the protector of his people. He always addressed the people in gentle words. He never used harsh words even when anybody addressed him rudely.

He was wise and virtuous. He was effulgent like the sun, in forgiveness like the earth, in intelligence like Brihaspati, in frame like Vasava, in prowess like Indra. He observed ascetic vows and honoured saints. He would forget hundreds of evils done to him but would gratefully remember a single act of kindness, ever shown.

In the leisure of his martial exercises, he had discussions on the Sastras with the wise and the aged people. He always followed the right in every walk of his life and never swerved from his royal duties.

If anybody approached him, he would talk to him first. He was exceedingly powerful but never haughty. He was the upholder of the four castes. He conferred honour upon people. He was worshipped by all. He was well versed in polity and greatly devoted to the Brahmins.

He was a friend of the poor and chastiser of the wicked. He was a cosmic benefactor. He was well versed in religion, social customs and laws. He looked after the welfare of his subjects and the people too loved him immensely. He never indulged in profane and irrelevant talks.

He had mastery of Yajur Veda, Dhanur Veda, the Vedangas, etc. Whenever people put a question to him he answered them wisely like Brihaspati. He was skilful in the use of arms. He was honoured by the scholars of the Vedas. He was proficient in philosophy and poetry.

He never spoke a lie even in extreme danger or peril. He was brave, candid and modest. He was the source of all good. He always respected his superiors. He was free from idleness. He was ever vigilant. He sought no evil. He had perfect control over anger.

He was ever ready to keep vigilant watch over his own faults. He had aged and pious Brahmins for his guide.

He was an expert rider, a great warrior, a valiant general. He had great skill in all the military manoeuvres. He was unconquered even by the gods. He was free from the evil habit of carping.

Sri Rama is an Avatara of Lord Hari. Lakshmana is an Avatara of Adisesha. Bharata and Satrughna are Avataras of the conch and discus. Sita is an Avatara of Sri Lakshmi.

Sri Rama possessed red eyes and his arms were sinewy. His steps were like those of an elephant. He had long arms, broad shoulders and black, curly hair. He was valiant and glowing with splendour. He was in no way inferior to Indra himself in battle. He was well versed in holy scriptures and equal to Brihaspati in wisdom. He was skilled in every science. He was an object of love and reverence with all people. He had his senses under perfect control. Even his enemies were pleased to see him. He was the terror of the wicked and the protector of the virtuous. He was endowed with keen intelligence. He could never be vanquished by anyone.

He renounced the throne and the pleasures of the senses and the world to fulfil the words of his father.

If Rama had longed for the throne, it was quite easy for him to get it. He was very popular. He was the mightiest of heroes. He destroyed the Rakshasas and bent the tremendous bow of Lord Siva. But he did not show the least physical force. He gladly accepted what was dictated by the cruel and wicked Kaikeyi.

The throne possessed less fascination for him than the obedience of his father’s behests. He renounced the kingdom and the comforts of a king. He gladly accepted exile. The laudable virtues of Sri Rama cannot be adequately described.
Of all the four brothers Sri Rama was a paragon of virtues.

He was not only kind and affectionate but generous and considerate of feelings for all around him. He had a splendid physique and winning manners. He had a magnanimous personality. He was extremely noble, generous, chivalrous and fearless. He was very simple and absolutely free from ostentation.

Sri Rama’s life was a life of holy obedience, of stainless purity, of matchless simplicity, laudable contentment, commendable self-sacrifice and remarkable renunciation. He paid equal respect to his mother and his stepmothers and revered his Guru.

Sita once told Rama to seek shelter in a safe place and let the forest dwellers alone as there was much danger there. Rama’s reply revealed his firm determination to adhere to truth, and to his duty as a king to protect those who took shelter under him. Sri Rama said, "O Sita, I may even give up life or you or Lakshmana but can never give up the fulfilment of my word given particularly to helpless Brahmins. Rama speaks but once and never fails to keep up his promise."

Sri Rama was happy in adversity, calm in miseries, intrepid in dangers.

Sri Rama was a mighty hero. He was the hero of heroes. Single-handed, he killed great and renowned warriors like Khara and Dushana. He vanquished the invincible Vali.

He was an ideal king. He ruled the kingdom in a wonderful way. He was just and righteous. He was courageous and kind. He was endowed with a gentle and generous disposition. He was civil and courteous.

His subjects loved him immensely. Not a single man was unhappy during his regime. He often used to say, "I will do anything and everything to please my subjects, and, if necessary I can even abandon my dear wife for their sake.

"That is the reason why his reign was called "Ramarajya."

There were no dacoits during his regime. All led a virtuous life. Nobody spoke any untruth. Anybody could leave a bag of gold or jewels even in the main street. No one would touch it."

Narada Bhakti Sutra - Post 49

Dear All,

In the previous post, we read how God sends His messengers for guiding man for spiritual evolvement.

Swami Sivananda writes in this context, thus:-

MYSTERIOUS HELP FROM THE LORD

"Just see how the Lord has helped the devotees in the following instances. Eknath heard an Akasavani (a voice from the sky). It said, "See Janardan Pant at Deva Giri. He will put you in the proper path and guide you." Eknath acted accordingly and found his Guru.

Tukaram received his Mantra, Rama Krishna Hari, in his dream. He repeated this Mantra and had Darshan (vision) of Lord Krishna.

Lord Krishna directed Namdev to get his higher initiation from a Sannyasin (renunciate) at Mallikarjuna.

Queen Chudalai assumed the form of Kumbha Muni, appeared before her husband Sikhidhwaja in the forest, and initiated him in the mysteries of Kaivalya (state of absolute independence).

Madhura Kavi saw a light in the firmament for three days consecutively. It guided him and took him to his Guru Nammalvar who was sitting in Samadhi underneath a tamarind tree near Tinnevelly.

Vilvamangal was very much attracted to Chintamani, the dancing woman. The latter became his Guru. Tulasidas received instructions from an invisible being to see Hanuman and, through Hanuman, to get Darshan of Sri Rama.

Competent disciples are never in want of a competent Guru. Realized souls are not rare. Ordinary ignorant-minded persons cannot easily recognise them. Only a few persons, who are pure and embodiments of all virtuous qualities, can understand realised souls, and they only will be benefited in their company.

So long as there is a world, there are Gurus and Vedas to guide the struggling souls in the path of Self-realisation. The number of realised souls may be less in the Iron Age when compared with the Satya Yuga (age of Truth), but they are always present to help the aspirants. Let each man take the path according to his capacity, temperament, and understanding. His Sadguru will meet him along that path. "

Now, to the next stage/ process.

PROCESS 4 - Upto man, to take the guidance of  these great men

  • Lord, out of His mercy, sends His great men of wisdom for the guidance of His human beings, for, the God knows that man otherwise will get lost in the glittering objective world.
  • Spiritual masters come, they are given the mission by God to guide the vast humanity in spiritual path.
  • It is one in a thousand or even a lakh who really strive to take the guidance of these masters.
  • Master's writings, Master's gospel, Master's literature , Master's service - all of these are attractive to the men of this world but the world with its illusory attraction is so powerful that when confronted with 2 options - to follow the Masters or to follow the world, a man often fails to pick up the option of following the Masters and man gets lost in  the call of this world of wine, woman and wealth!!.
But for that one in thousand or one in a lakh who develops the conviction to follow the Master and treads along the path given by the  Master, what does the God give in return?

LAST AND THE FINAL LITTLE GRACE BY THE LORD

The Lord knows that His devotee can reach upto the penultimate step in reaching the Lord and  for climbing the final step, only the Lord can help him.

So, the Lord extends His little help to the devotee, holds his hand and takes him to His abode of peace, Prashanti!!

The expression "Little Grace by the Lord" has to be understood in its proper sense here.

The expression "little grace" is given in this sutra because, after extending their initial little grace in terms of sending His Messengers, Masters for the guidance of man, the Lord knows that the devotee, with his steadfastness, has followed the guidance of those Masters and with conviction, he has almost reached the penultimate stage in his spiritual height and now, he needs only God's hand, the last and a little grace, to cross this ocean of samsara and reach and merge with the Lord.

So, it is upto the effort of a devotee whether to take the guidance of Masters as per process 3 and 4 and reach the abode of Lord or to return to his stage prior to the taking the guidance of the Masters and lead a life of a man lost in his way and living in dark!!

Unfortunately, in this Kali age, number of seekers who really hold on Guru / God's teachings / instructions are very few in number and those who listen to the teachings, appreciate the same and then forget the same and get back to the world of Maya are maximum in number. This is perhaps the curse of this Kali Yuga!!!

Love.

Narada Bhakti Sutra - Post 48

Sutra 38. Mukhyatastu Mahatkripayaiva Bhagavat kripaa leshaadwaa.

But it (devotion) is obtained chiefly by the grace of great men or through a slight measure of Divine grace.

Mukhyatah: chiefly
tu: but
Mahat-kripayah: by the grace of great men
Eva: only
Bhagavat- kripa-lesaat: through a slight measure of the grace of the Lord
Vaa: or.

In the preceding three Sutras the devotees’ exertion was emphasised, for example:

Vishaya tyagat sangatyagat cha”: abandoning of objects and attachment;

Avyavrita Bhajanaat”: ceaseless worship and

Bhagavat-Guna-Srava-kirtanaat”: hearing of the glories of the Lord and Kirtan or singing the names and glories of the Lord.

In this Sutra and the next three, the descent of the Lord’s grace is referred to.

Mahat-kripayah: by the grace of great men

Let us try and understand the essence and the sequence which leads to the Grace of great men now.

PROCESS 1- God's claim
  • When God created man, God bestowed the power of discrimination to mankind, the last and the pinnacle of God's creation.
  • So, God does not rush and shower His unlimited grace to man to realize God, just like that. Why Lord does not do that??
  • Because, Lord says, I have given you the discrimination to choose between the good and the bad, between the eternal and the ephemeral, between true and false, between Godly deeds and Demonic deeds. Should you not then use your discrimination O Man, and realize that Realizing me is the only purpose of your life??

PROCESS 2 - God's little help / grace
  • Having said that, God cannot sit back and allow the man to wander without any aim, without any focus and keep performing karmas not aligning with Godly deeds and then, get fixed in the cycle of birth and death. So, God does intervene and extends His grace with a little help. What is that help / grace??
  • God sends the realized masters / Gurus / Acharyas to the rescue / guidance of men.
  • What do these great men do??

PROCESS 3- Grace of great men of wisdom

  • When the great men are moved by compassion towards their mortal brothers, the Lord works through them.
  • This compassion is the very nature of these great men / acharyas. They do not carry a flag and go about deliberating on their compassion. The compassion just flows.
  • It is logical. Only a man who himself had lost direction to a pilgrimage, went here and there and at last found his way to the sanctum sanctorum, had the divine darshan, is qualified and only he, effortlessly, selflessly, without a thought, just comes forward and approaches a prospective wanderer and says, " I have struggled to find the temple, why should you also struggle? Come, I shall guide you  and make you board a direct flight to divinity. I shall give you all the guidance you require, to reach the Lord.
  • In Srimad Bhagavatam it is said, “In the company of the great prevail talks which perfectly convey My majesty and which soothe the heart and the ear. From listening to these, faith, attachment and devotion will succeed one another towards Him who is the way to salvation.”

PROCESS 4 - Upto man, to take the guidance of these great men

We will continue with this process and then see how again, man reaches the stage to call for that little grace of Lord, the final one, to reach and merge with the Lord, in the next post.

Love.
