When we join an institution for pursuing education, we are required to be equipped with some minimum qualifications. It holds good even for someone who joins an organization for work. These qualifications determine our intent, aspiration, conviction and the will to take up the task for which we apply and aspire.
Likewise, in sadhana too, there are qualifications which is elucidated by Author through this series on Sadhana Chatushtaya. It has been poured in a very vivid manner so that you all can dive and bathe into it. This applies to every sadhaka or a spiritual aspirant who takes up the path of sadhana.
Remember that these qualifications are required to be garnered by a sadhaka through his own efforts, which grabs the attention of the Guru. The venerable Guru then choses you to initiate into the Brahma Jnana path.
Here the Author feeds you sumptuously with these qualifications so that you get the Brahma Jnana to inch closer to the goal, perhaps in this birth itself.
Blessed are you to have such unimaginable treaties delivered to you where you are. This has been ordained to reach to you. So, you must humbly and wholeheartedly appreciate the fact with folded hands that you are given that special treatment and attention.
Man is in continuous exploration of happiness in everything that he comes across. But due to the finitude that he experiences in whatever happiness he gets, he constantly is pushed into the realms of disappointment. He then, resorts to seeking grace from the Lord to help him out of this discomfort. The ever-compassionate Lord then makes him aware that human birth is the pinnacle and bestows on him the wisdom for self-introspection and self-enquiry. Considering the Purushartha and Prarabdha levels of the jiva, he might get inward and eventually earns the grace of the Lord. This grace enables the jiva turned sadhaka to become aware of the knowledge of real and unreal. It then leads to the discrimination between the real and unreal. With this brief background, let us hear from the Source. Here is the pour on the first of the 4 qualifications – VIVEKA (discrimination):
Once you have gone through the above pour, you
would be able to connect to this chart in a much better way:
The intellectual concept is given now, hoping that you have understood it in the easiest way it was given in the pour. Vidyaranya used the following terms for expounding this concept:
Anvaya |
Invariable (continuous, always present) |
Vyatireka |
Variable (separates present and not present) |
Bhaane |
Present |
Abhaane |
Absent |
Wherever there is a combination of bhaane and abhaane (we understood as aware or not aware) - the final conclusion = vyatireka, both aware and not aware are there.
So, when we routed the 5 koshas through the 4 states of consciousness, in all the combinations, there was at least one bhaane or abhaane (aware or not aware), so the final conclusion was, it is vyatireka.
But when it comes to last “SELF”, in all 4 states there is no combination of bhaane and abhaane, aware and not aware - it is all aware in all 4 columns of all 4 states - in the row “SELF”. So the final conclusion for this row at the last column is - anvaya, i.e, it is continuous, always present! That is why we say SELF is changeless, pure existence.
After understanding the lucid explanation given in the pour, it is possible now to be clear on the above matrix.
Next post would take you through the most profound
requirement – VAIRAGYA. This takes birth from VIVEKA. So please get geared for passing
through the fire to turn into gold.
