Sacredness of Human Birth and Sadhana

"Man alone has the chance to liberate himself from the wheel of birth and death, through the pleasant means of serving God…"
 (SSS Vol. VI, page. 60)

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

It is said that even devas existing in deva loka who can get whatever they think of, within a fraction of a second, envy human beings because, it is only we human beings who can actually taste the joy of God realization. Devas cannot experience “God realization” or “Liberation”.

If this one single factor is absorbed and taken in, all the pain suffered by us in all earlier and present birth is worth the joy of taking up spiritual sadhana sincerely and aim at retracing and reaching God, merging and existing as purely as He created us, which was understood clearly in the post “Why God created Man”.

I know that this expression SPIRITUAL SADHANA is a little scaring some times and heart of heart we are not able to relate whole heartedly to this expression. Why? Because we look at this term in isolation without understanding the essence of the same.

If only we are able to dive deep and steal the treasure (of Grand truth) that “we are actually marching towards the grand abode of Lord, prashanti, inch by inch, day by day, when we pursue a chosen path towards purity and perfection”, then we can easily understand that the same chosen path is termed by this world as SADHANA.

With the above grand treasure realized, what world calls as sadhana has to be taken up whole-heartedly, not as escapism from our miseries but with the most positive thought that we are actually galloping towards our Lord when we take up a spiritual path.

The foundation for our sadhana must not be taken up with the premise that we are impure, bad, egoistic, etc., but with the understanding that we are incomplete and we have to pursue a pure path to discover (I say discover and not attain because essentially we are pure and divine) the pure, divine soul that we essentially are.

In one of the talks, Brother Hari Subramanyam beautifully explains how an architect, a sculptor ends up with a never before, enchanting, divine sculpture of Krishna  which appears as though Sri Krishna is present there, actually playing the divine flute.

People approach the sculptor and asks him, how did you manage to make this most wonderful, divine sculpture of  the lord to which the sculptor answers  with  pure heart,

“Actually, I did not do anything much. I was just chiseling (cutting out) out whatever in the stone that was not Krishna and then, I found that Krishna was already there”.

So, dear ones, at the end of spiritual journey, when THE day must arrive in our life when we merge with Lord and become one with him, when our sadhana meets its fructification, we would realize that we have not attained anything which we already were not. We just chiseled out all that we were not and ultimately, we discovered within ourselves, that we were truly divine ever.

This is the most important conviction that we have to develop before taking up spiritual sadhana. We need not ridicule ourselves, look down upon ourselves, we need not peep into the wretched being that we might be at present and start the spiritual sadhana with a sinner like feeling!! We must believe what we would  ultimately be, if we take up the spiritual path sincerely and to the satisfaction of our Lord.

And to grace us this conviction, we have before us, true stories of great masters in our sacred Bharath, who rose from different walks in the society, as normal human being like anyone else but they believed in what they essentially are, worked towards the same and attained perfection and have left back their foot print, their legacy, their success story in the path of SELF REALIZATION.

Here is one such master who speaks on His spiritual journey

Sadhana [spiritual practice] is important. It will give you a comprehensive knowledge of life with all its currents and crosscurrents.

I worked hard in my life and attained something that gives me solace. I found out that life is mingled with sorrow and joy; both of these feelings should not be allowed to disturb the course of life.

A human being is not imperfect, but incomplete. Man’s essential nature is a limitless horizon. The call to inner Truth is present in him with all profundity, but his analytical logic is shallow.

A sadhaka has to go through a series of internal experiences. When a sadhaka’s convictions are filtered by the systematic and organized way of sadhana, the mind becomes penetrating and one-pointed.

Through constant contemplation and meditation, one begins having glimpses of the Truth, and these experiences strengthen his faith. Growing internally, that exclusive faith becomes the source of inner strength, enabling the aspirant to move along the path until perfection is achieved.

The human mind is complex with all its typical moods, manners, and weapons. The purpose of sadhana is to be free from the magic wonders of the mind and remain free all the time.

Freedom is a divine gift lent to mortals. A seeker of Truth should first have freedom from all time-honored taboos. Mental freedom is an accepted fact and is definitely higher than physical freedom. Free spirit is godly and alone can claim kinship with God.

The potential to realize the Truth is present in every person. In some it remains dormant, while in others it is awakened. The more one directs one’s awareness toward the Divine Force, the more one realizes the emptiness of the objects of the world. That realization helps one to withdraw one’s mind from the external world, and to compose oneself for inner exploration.

All sadhanas, all practices, are meant to purify and strengthen the mind that disturbs your being and prevents you from being aware of the Reality that is within you.

To be spiritual means to be aware of the Reality all the time, to be aware of the Absolute Truth all the time, and to be aware of the Lord within you all the time.”

IMPORTANCE OF HUMAN BIRTH

Bhagwan Sathya Sai Baba says

"A human birth is the most sacred one among the 84 lakhs (84,00,000) of different living beings in this creation. To attain such a sacred birth is a great fortune, indeed."
(Baba the Breath of Sai, page. 311)

"The traditional number of created beings is 84 lakhs, and man is the final item of the evolutionary procession; but, why did the number stop at 84 lakhs? It stopped because man is the zenith, the fullness; He is endowed with manas, buddhi, chiththa and ahamkaara (mind, intelligence, reasoning faculty and ego), all four, in an integrated personality, whereas the birds and beasts and all other species have mostly ahamkaaram (ego) alone. Man has the capacity to follow sathya, dharma, shaanthi and prema; man alone has it."
(SSS Vol. 6-15)

"Man alone has the chance to liberate himself from the wheel of birth and death, through the pleasant means of serving God. But as a result of ignorance, or what is worse, perversity, he lets the opportunity slip from his hands, and suffers grief and pain, fear and anxiety, ad infinitum."
 (SSS Vol. VI, page. 60)

“Embodiments of Love!

Human life is the most sacred in the entire creation of God. Daivam Maanusha Rupena (God incarnates in the form of human being). Humanness is pure, unsullied and beyond attributes. Such a sacred human life is being polluted with evil desires and thus man is bringing disrepute to human birth itself.

Jantu Naam Nara Janma Durlabham (human birth is the rarest and the noblest). It was God who created everything in the universe, right from the microcosm to macrocosm. In that case, why is it that He has attached utmost importance to human birth alone? Only man has the capacity to accomplish things which no other living being can.”
Divine discourse -16.10.1999

Let us believe in the above Sai’s words, believe in the sanctity and sacredness of our life, pour our infinite gratitude to God for having made us essentially so pure, so sacred, no matter what we are as of now.

It is God and only God who waits for us endlessly, in innumerable births for us to return to Him, one day. Sai, when he floats and reaches the SK Hall and sees the sea of humanity, He sees us only as His true image and not what we have made unto ourselves.

So, we must bring about change in our life, we have to change our pattern of life, we have to devote some time during the day daily for connecting with Lord.

Let us get more into the sacredness of  this human birth, based on our Lord's affirmation we have read in today's post, before proceeding to the next step - SADHANA

WHY GOD CREATED MAN

Why God Created The World

Every Sai devotee knows Swami’s declaration, echoing the declaration of our shruthis- “I separated myself from myself to love myself”!!

God says, as though, I created this world as a sport, as a leela, to witness countless creations of my own image.

But a man, witnessing never ending calamities in this creation starts conversing with the Lord

Man: “If You wanted a hobby, why did You create pain and cancer and terrible emotions as part of it? It may be a play to You, Lord, but it is misery and death to those who don’t know it is just a play”

(Two people marry and think they have found the perfect love, and then one of them dies —what a tragedy! Or someone who has made lots of money thinks he is happy and then sees the stock market crash, and in despair jumps out the window—how terrible! And in the sense traps of sex, wine, and money there is temptation not only from the outside, but from within. How is man going to justify all this? And why are there gangsters, and persons who are insane, and all kinds of dreadful going-ons)

Please answer o God, Why are there germs that kill so many people every year? If the bones of those who die of disease were heaped together, the pile would be as high as the Himalayas; and yet it is a hobby to You, God. What about those who are victims of Your hobby?”

God: “I have made all men in My image. If you know you are a part of Me, you can live in this world and enjoy it as I do.”

(We can say that God made this earth not only as a hobby, but also because He wanted to make perfect souls that would evolve back to Him. He sent them out under the cloak of delusion, or maya, but endowed with freedom. That is the greatest gift of God. He has not denied mankind the free choice that He Himself has. He has given man freedom to be good or evil, to do exactly as he pleases—even to deny God. Both good and evil exist, but nobody compels you to be evil unless you choose to practice evil; and nobody can compel you to be good unless you want to be good. God created us with the ability to exercise His gifts of intelligence and free choice, by which we can choose to go back to Him. God certainly means to take us back when we are ready to go. We are like the biblical prodigal son, and God is continuously calling to us to come Home.)

God:  No joy of the senses, no joy of possession, can match the joy of God. Though I had everything from eternity to eternity, I began to think, “I am all-powerful, and Joy itself, but there is no one else to enjoy Me. I will make souls in My image, and clothe them as human beings with free choice, to see whether they will seek My material gifts and the temptations of money, wine, and sex; or whether they will seek the million times more intoxicating joy of My consciousness.”

(God is very just and fair. He gave man freedom to accept His love and live in His joy, or to cast it aside and live in delusion, in ignorance of Him. Though all created things belong to God, there is one thing God hasn’t—our love. When He created us, He did have something to attain, and that is our love. We can withhold that love, or give it to Him. And He will wait endlessly until we are ready to offer our love to Him.)

(Extracts from a lecture delivered by Sri Paramahamsa yogananda, with the sequence changed suitably to drive home the message)

Dear ones, What do we learn from the above?
  • Like a painter who does not complete a painting unless he stands near to the portrait he makes, sometimes a little far, sometimes from more height, sometimes bending down, goes back and gives few more strokes with his brush and then smiles to see the perfection in his own created painting, God has created this world, you and me, with the perfection at His level, at His state, pure, blemish less (Niranjana as we sing in Bhajans)
  • He gave us the discrimination, the choice, to either BE HIM when we were born or to become slaves to the petty joy of wine, woman, wealth.
  • He engaged us in the rope game, keeping Himself at one end and the world at the other end and observed, whether we reach to Him or to this maya jagath.
  • If we, all of us, the entire world of beings, had chosen, when we came into this world for the first time, to just remain as we were created by the supreme lord, as His image, as He himself, then how   wonderful this world would have been, with each man existing as God, witnessing the other man also as God!!
  • All the disaster, all the calamities, all the war, all hatred emerged only when man chose to take side of wine, woman and wealth (That is GREED)
  • Is it justified then, to blame God for what we have done unto ourselves?
  • Having gone far away from Him, the time has come now to retrace, go back to Him, merge with Him and exist as Him!!
  • One man cannot take charge of transforming the entire creation and to make every one return to the kingdom of God. But each one, in his individual level, can surely start the journey to the Lord’s abode!!
  • For this world to be wonderful, there is no choice but for every man to retrace and find his lost love for God and rush to God and live as God ( Swami’s call- God is Love, live in Love)
  • Like we learnt in a bhajan, we cry out to the lord “O God, is there anything in me which you have not created, is my own creation and can offer to you, perhaps nothing. Still, there is one thing, which is not created or bestowed on me by you, but it is just YOU, WHICH IS LOVE!
  • AND I KNOW, THIS ONE AND ONLY THING, IS WORTH OFFERING TO YOU AND YOU WOULD LOVE TO ACCEPT MY LOVE, WHEN I EXIST AS LOVE
  • TERA TUJH KO ARPAN KYA LAAGE MERA!!! PREM DAKSHINA SVEEKARAO BHAGWAN!!

From tomorrow onwards, we will get deeper into how precious is our birth, how sacred is this birth granted by Lord and how we can make use of this birth, to ultimately EXIST AS HOW HE BROUGHT US INTO THIS EARTH!!

Love
