Introduction to Vedas and Vedanta - Part 33

Dear All,

So, the stage is set for the disciple to seek the true knowledge from his Acharya who stressed upon the need for the prospective disciple to attain / amass the wealth of   4 qualifications and sent him back to acquire the same and then come back to Him.

The disciple enters the kutir of his Guru and prostrates at His feet.

Here begins the real Guru-Sishya parampara.

The Disciple has few questions coupled with prayers to the enlightened master!!

SVAAMIN NAMASTE NATA-LOKA-BANDHO
KAARUNYA-SINDHO PATITAM BHAVAABDHAU
MAAMUDDHAR'AATMIIYA-KATAAKSHHA-DRSHHTYAA
R^JVYAATIKAARUNYA-SUDH'AABHIVR SHHTYAA

"Hail, Lord, friend of those who bow before You, and ocean of compassion. I have fallen into this sea of samsara. Save me with a direct glance from Your eye which bestows grace like nectar.

Salutation to thee, O Lord, full of compassion, O friend of those who bend before Thee. I have fallen into the ocean of birth and rebirth. Rescue me by Thy never failing glance which rains the ambrosia of sincerity and mercy."

DURVAARA-SAMSAARA-DAV'AAGNI-TAPTAM
 DODHUUYAMAANAM DURA-DR^SHHTA-VAATAIH
BHIITAM PRAPANNAM PARIPAAHI MR^TYOH
SHARANYAM ANYAD YAD AHAM NA JAANE

"I am stricken by the unquenchable forest fire of samsara and blown about by the unavoidable winds of circumstances. Save me from death, for I am afraid and have come to You for refuge. I know of no one else to help me.

Protect from death, him who is heated by the roaring wild fire of changing life so difficult to extinguish, him who is oppressed and buffeted by the blasts of misfortune, since no other refuge do I know."

(Vivekachudamani)

The disciple thus surrenders himself, his total identity at the feet of his Master and calls out to the Master to rescue him from this unending cycle of birth and death, the samsara.

He has realized the futility of this objective world; he has developed Vairagya through Viveka and Mumukshatva through Shad Sampat.

However, his past life, his past actions still follow him like his shadow and here he is, standing at a crucial stage in his life where,

He has known that this world is a mithya, a super imposition, a mirage and not real.

He wants to transcend this world and realize the ultimate truth which he hopes his Acharya will hold his hand and teach him.

In between this futility of unreal and his quest for real, he has the shadow of all his past which he cannot transcend till the Master accepts him in His ashram and takes him over and says, as Guru Yukteshwar said to Paramahamsa Yogananda, “Allow me to work through you”.

Introduction to Vedas and Vedanta - Part 32

Divyatman,

Adi Sankara says ,

“DURLABHAM TRAYAM EVAITAT DEVANUGRAHA HETUKAM
MANUSHYATVAM MUMUKSHUTVAM MAHAPURUSHA SAMSHRAYAH”

(Manhood, burning desire for liberation (Mumukshatvam), the capacity to completely surrender to a man of wisdom-These three things are rare indeed, and wherever they are found, they are due to the Lord’s own Grace)

(Vivekachudamani)

1. In this life, one takes so much for granted. What one does not realize is that, just being born as a human being is a rare blessing in itself. Amongst the multitudes of billions of organisms (living beings), only a few are given the opportunity of being born as humans. That by itself, should be considered as our privilege and utilized with utmost respect.

2. Even if one is born as a human, not everyone gets the desire or drive to work towards liberation (moksha). A very few of the few beings are inspired with this desire.

Swami Chinmayananda writes - “To employ in life, a deep discriminative understanding and to perceive the ultimate futility of all the ordinary mundane pursuits of life and thereby discover an enthusiasm to seek a nobler path of self-redemption is rarest of all”!!

3. In spite of being inspired to attain moksha, not everyone is lucky enough to get the company and proximity of the learned and enlightened.

Those that are blessed with the above 3 are truly fortunate. They should make use of every ounce of it and count their blessings along the way.

After Vairagya and Shad Samapth are attained, the mind moves towards the source of its own accord, because it has lost its hold now on external objects. It has no resting place in this objective universe. Purification of the mind and mental discipline form the rock-bottom foundation of yoga.

When this is effectuated, the longing for liberation dawns by itself. Mumukshatva is coupled with burning Vairagya, Self-Realization will come within the twinkling of an eye.

Generally, the vast majority of people have got a dull type of Vairagya and Mumukshatva so they do not succeed in their attempts.

That aspirant who is endowed with these four qualifications should hear the Srutis (scriptures) from a Brahma Nishta Guru (preceptor who is established in Brahman), and then reflect and meditate on the inner Self. He will soon get Self-Realization.

In author’s own experience, after His Master, the Lord of Lords Sai gave that glance to the author in SK Hall in August 2010 during the Parthi Yatra, Swami ignited the fire of Mumukshatva in the author.

With inadequate interest in reading Srutis, he hardly knew what Mumukshatva means as knowledge, but he experienced it in absolute terms and later, after a week or so, when he picked up Vivekachudamani and read the initial chapter, he could relate to his inner experience.

In the fire of Mumukshatva ignited by the grace of Swami who knew that in physical terms, that was the last glance He is giving for His devotee, the author comes back, takes up a book on Yoga Vashishta and …., he experienced as though the whole city, the whole country, the whole world and beyond the earth, all the worlds, had been burnt to ashes!!!

In the verse, it mentions about man of wisdom and here, He got Mumukshatva by the glance of the Lord from whom wisdom originates and illumines the entire jagath and beyond.

Author has shared the experience not to talk about himself but to give you exactly what Mumukshatva means, as an experience, as a state of mind in spiritual sadhana.
