Narada Bhakti Sutra - Post 12

Sutra 5. Yatprapya na Kinchitvaanchati na sochati  na Dweshti na ramate notsaahee bhavati.

By attaining which (divine love) he does not desire anything else, neither grieves (over any loss or death of dear ones) nor hates anything, does not indulge in sensual pleasures, nor does he feel any urge (for the acquisition of material things).

Yat: which (love of God)
Praapya: having obtained
Na: not
Kinchit: anything
Vaanchati: desires
Na: not
Sochati: grieves
Na: not
Dweshti: feels enmity
na: not
Ramate: rejoices
Utsaahee: one who is active (in one’s own interest)
Na Bhavati: does not become, or is not.

Labhdwa: In the previous Sutra (having gained) and Prapya (having attained) in the present one are apparently similar in meaning, yet, there is a subtle distinction. Attainment involves personal effort. Labha or gain on the contrary may come unexpectedly.

Now Rishi Narada describes the negative aspect of divine love.

Na Kinchit Vaanchati: A devotee rises above all earthly wants. His heart is full of supreme Peace and perfect satisfaction. Therefore he does not desire anything else. He is conscious of the unreality and illusory nature of worldly objects . Hence he does not take any interest in them . His thirst for sensual pleasure has been quenched forever by the attainment of God-realisation. His heart is full now. Kingdom, wealth, power, etc., have no attraction for him.

Why does desire manifest? On account of Avidya or ignorance or imperfection or lack of bliss. When one gets darshan of God, all desires are burnt up. When the boy Dhruva had Darshan of Lord Hari, the desire to obtain kingdom that prompted him to worship the Lord disappeared. Devotion is a fire like Gyanagni (fire of wisdom) that bums up all mundane desires .

Desires arise from a sense of imperfection or limitation. The feeling of imperfection is possible only when a man finds something outside himself, other than himself. When the devotee attains God-realization he is not conscious of anything other than God. Therefore, a devotee becomes absolutely desire less.

Dear All,

From where desires arise???

Step 1

A man, born divine, created divine by the divine lord, due to the primal ignorance which is termed as Avidya in vedanta, forgets that he is divine.

Step 2

If he has forgotten that he is divine, then what does he identify himself as????

The little body, the monkey mind, the misguiding intellect. This is what man thinks he is.

Step 3

If he had not forgotten that he is divine, then, his only desire would have been to quickly finish off the human birth and merge with the source.

Step 4

Since he has now identified himself with his physical existence, then obviously, he develops desires to glorify his limited physical existence.

So, having identified himself with his body, mind and intellect, now,

his  body desires (all  physical desires, desires to look good, desires to satisfy sex needs, desire to maintain his body etc. etc.)

his mind desires (his mind desires all those things which he thinks will make him / keep him as best among men in the material world- so, he desires money, he desires power, he desires fame, he desires property, he desires children, he desires name in the society .... and here, the list gets endless

his intellect desires- having acquired a good intellect - he desires to be acknowledged as most knowledgable, most intellect!!!!!

Step 5

So, now, with all his desires burning like a flame, he sets out to ACT, to fulfill his desires!!!!

Step 6

All his actions or Karma, aimed at fulfilling his desires, earn him karma as per his action!!!!

This chain is explained as Knot of heart or Hrdaya granthi in vedantha and the chain is explained as

AVIDYA-- KAMA--- KARMA
(Ignorance of one's divinity ----> leads to desires ----> leads to karma due to actions taken up to fulfill his desires

What is the solution to cut this chain, to come out of this chain of Avidya Kama Karma???

Simple - LOVE GOD!!

Turn all your stupid desires, all your attachment, to God!!!

Breath God, Drink God, Walk God, sleep God, live God, Love God!!!

Then, the chain of Avidya , Kama, Karma is reversed.

The Kama being now to attain God, all actions are undertaken with this only aim.

So, now the Karma or action  is done only with the back drop of God realization.

With such Karma, desires are reduced and ultimately eliminated.

With desires eliminated, the ignorance of one's divinity also gets subdued, reduced  and gets annihilated in one birth.

So, the chain is :

Karma ( to reach God) -------> Kama ( Desiring only God)------> Vidya (Wisdom that I AM GOD, AHAM BRAHMASMI) -------> Moksha (Liberation)!!!!!

We will continue with the remaining part of 5th verse in next post.

Love.

Narada Bhakti Sutra - Post 11

Dear All,

Now we move on to the last 2 expressions of verse 3.

Amrito Bhavati: He who has attained God realisation becomes immortal. He ever lives in the presence of God. He has his being in God. He has no more desires and so he will not take any more body or birth. Immortality, amritatwa constitutes the essential nature of Bhakti.

Tripto Bhavati : A devotee who is a Siddha or who is perfect, and who is immortal is absolutely satisfied.

Contentment here referred to is not the kind of satisfaction which one gets when some desire is fulfilled. It is absolute satisfaction that comes from the absence of all desires and the attainment of God realisation. Only when one attains the highest perfection he can be perfectly satisfied in his own Self. Only then, he can be contented with oneself. There is no other gain superior to that absolute satisfaction attained through God-realisation.

He who has the philosopher’s stone cares not for little pieces of gold. Even so a devotee who has reached the fountain source of everything cares not for the little objects of this world.

The devotee loves God and serves Him and His creation. He does not strive consciously for Mukti but God confers Mukti on His devotee unsolicited.

Special note by Author on Trupto Bhavati

In 2012, spiritual session on a verse from  Brahmanandavalli in Taittriya Upanishad was given by the Author to a select group of devotees on a verse which says,

HE WHO KNOWS…WITHIN THE CAVE OF HIS HEART, REALISES ALL HIS DESIRES ALONG WITH THE OMNISCIENT BRAHMAN

This line of the verse was further explained in the highest context of Brahman to the devotees.

Afterwards, the  essence of “Realizing / Fulfilling all desires (Trupto Bhavati) was also explained in a relatively lucid manner to the devotees later and the essence of the same is reproduced below,  replacing "Brahman" which was explained in that teaching given with "God", so that it becomes relatively easier to understand.

In  our  desire fulfillment at worldly level, each desire is fulfilled successively.
· If you have one pleasure, you cannot have another pleasure at the same time, and if you want to have a third kind of pleasure, the first two must go. Thus, you cannot have varieties of pleasure at the same time because of the conditioning factor introduced by the sense organs in such experience.
·  Your senses do not give you simultaneous knowledge of anything. When one thing is happening, another thing is forgotten.

Except god realization, all other desire fulfillments: -

  •     are caused by senses.
  •  are due to fulfillment of a desire of processing /  experiencing something which is outside yourself.
  •   Due   to the above 2 conditioning factors, you cannot enjoy more than 1 desire at one time. the mere fact that the   desire fulfillment is due to your sense perception of object outside you, these 2 factors playing together- senses and outside objects - can give you fulfillment of only one desire at a time.
  •  Have you ever experienced, that you could simultaneously enjoy fulfillment of more   than 1 desire at a time?? not possible!!
  • And, since a human is always hungry to experience (though it takes him lots and lots of birth to even know about this hunger) the ultimate / eternal / everlasting desire (which can be joy, not desire), he jumps from one tree to another, runs from pillar to post, enjoying one fruit (desire), leaving the remains then and there and jumping in search of a more sweeter fruit which he believes can give him more happiness for increased duration of time than the former fruit.
  • Not only that he jumps from one fruit to another, after jumping to 10 fruits like this, his vasanas (mental impressions on consuming each fruit) draws him back sometimes from the 10th fruit to the 2nd fruit and thus he is caught in the chakravyuh of the objective world of objective fruits.
Now come to the desire fulfillment upon God  realization/  Finding and merging with God, in love, with Love and AS  LOVE.

All the conditioning factors in the earlier relative desire fulfillment are not there in God realization.

Neither senses are there, nor mind is there, nor external objects are there and therefore, the fulfillment is not due to anything without.

The fulfilment here is within, total, complete, not successive or one by one, but instant and simultaneous.

It is not fulfilling one desire at a time when it comes to desire fulfillment of Finding God.

There are no other desires and hence it is not that any other desire is there in the waiting line, to be fulfilled after God realization fulfillment.

When you have Found God and merged in God, then along with that, all possible desires are fulfilled

                                              because

you cannot have any more desires to be fulfilled, upon fulfillment of desire to merge with God, in LOVE.

Hence, the one who has found God is - TRUPTO BHAVATI!!!!

Love.

Narada Bhakti Sutra - Post 10

Sutra 4. Yallabdhwa puman siddho Bhavati, Amrito  Bhavati, Tripto Bhavati.

(On attaining it (this supreme love) man becomes perfect, immortal and (fully) satisfied.)

Yat: which;
Labdhwa: having attained;
Puman: man;
Siddhah : perfect; Bhavati: becomes;
Amrita: Immortal; Bhavati: becomes;
Triptah: satisfied; Bhavati: becomes.

Puman: The word Puman is specially significant. It means any man. The practice of Bhakti and the attainment of Mukti are not restricted by any considerations of caste, creed, colour, sex, or country. Every human being who has faith, devotion and aspiration can cultivate Bhakti and attain God-realisation through Bhakti. Even Nandan, Dharma Vyadha, Raidas, Kabir attained God-realisation.

Siddho Bhavati : The devotee becomes perfect through God-realisation. His object is attained. All his desires are gratified by God-realisation. He never feels the want of anything. He enjoys supreme peace, eternal and perfect satisfaction and everlasting bliss and so he becomes a siddha.

For a devotee Siddhis or powers are worthless. He does not care for them. These are nothing when compared to Divine Love . He rejects even the position of Indra or Brahma, even Mukti or liberation. His mind is filled with divine ecstasy. He has realized the whole.

He has realized the essence and totality of all He has attained the source and fountain of all. And so he is perfect, immortal and thoroughly satisfied. He cannot be attracted towards external objects, which are incomplete, imperfect, defective and are only parts .

A Siddha is a perfect man. He has reached the goal. He has attained God-realization.

In common parlance the word Siddha denotes a man who is endowed with various superhuman powers or Siddhis. It is not in any such sense the word is used here. The sign of a perfect man or Siddha is not the possession of miraculous powers but the attainment of God-realization or unity With the Supreme Being.

Author's special note

(As long as one is a devotee, as mentioned above, he does not care for any Siddhi or Yogic powers when he does not even care for liberation/Mukhti.  The devotee is satisfied to be immersed in his love for God.

Once the devotee attains moksha / liberation as a fruit of his Parama Prema for Lord, even then, the Jiva devotee turned Jivan mukhta, never ever thinks/ cares about any Siddhi or Yogic powers, nor does he  demonstrates any such powers.

Only for the transformation of his fellow beings, only in the task given by God intuitively, with his mind rendered absolutely pure, a jivanmukhta spontaneously  uses his power to know the minds of his fellow beings, his disciple so that He prescribes instructions to take his disciple / fellow beings to a higher level in  their spiritual evolvement.

Any power exercised by a Realized being is only in the interest of  his disciple or for the Loka Kalyanam and the mukhta does not even recognize / recollect the power exercised by him in this regard!!!!)

Love.
