A bhajan offering on the Maha Shivaratri day

A bhajan with its in-depth contemplation on Lord Shiva, on the  most auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri

JAYA SHANKARA BHAVA GOCHARA
SHIVA CHIDAMBARA AUMKAARA
PARTHI VIHARA PAPA VIDURA
JAGATODHARA BRAHMA PARA

Victory to Lord Shiva, who is.

Bhavagochara- beyond knowledge (Lalithasahasranama - Mano vachamagochara – She who is beyond the mind and the word)

Chidambara- residing in chit ambaram- our chit, consciousness, which is vast and anantam like the vast space- KNOWLEDGE SPACE.

Aumkara - the universal consciousness, chit ambaram, with the cosmic vibration- AUMKARA, projected its maya Shakti- prakriti and thereafter, the creation evolved. For clear understanding, we say, Brahman willed...or thought… but He has no form and attribute to think, so the evolution just happened, because we human beings wee to be born and in our state of highest state of purity, we had to enjoy the bliss of merging back with the source!!.

Parthivihara- taken a human form and dwelling with His body in a finite place, though he is chit amabara

Papa vidura - destroyer of all sins…destroyer of our mind which recognizes all our sins and the resultant prarabdha

Jagatodhara- for the protection of virtues and destruction of evil, I incarnate from ages to ages

Brahma Para - Para Brahman - supreme brahman, purusha, nirgunanirakara, defined as Sathyam, Jnanam, Anantam.

UMA SAHAYAM PARAMESVARAM PRABHUM
TRILOCHANAM NEELAKANTAM PRASHAANTAM
DHYAATVA MUNIR GACHHATI BHUTA YONIM
SAMASTA SAAKSHIM TAMASA: PARASTAAT

(By mediating upon lord Parameswara consorted by mother Uma, the highest lord, the all powerful, the three eyes, the blue necked and the ever tranquil, a true man of reflection reaches Him, who is the source of all the manifested world, the witness of all, and who is beyond darkness)
                                                                      Kaivalya Upanishad

Uma sahayam - Purusa and prakriti - flutist and flute, writer and pen. Like the flute of matter is thrilled by the spirit of krishna, the flutist, Paramesvara, the purusa, expresses himself through the matter- prakriti.

Parameswara - No experience is possible without the spark of life within us. the flutist thrills the flute to continue its music rhythmically.

Three eyed - Pure consciousness, not only illumines through the vehicles, the sense perceptions, the world, to us, but it has a vision of its own, which can be experienced by us only when we transcend all vehicles.

Symbolically, 3rd eye represents, above the 2 fleshy eyes of each individual, the vision for all mortal objects, an intuitive vision , the vision of pure knowledge.

When this vision is awakened, entire world of names and forms around siva/ around a seer, gets burnt / gets removed / annihilated. transcending the limited vision of names and forms and comes to live with the universal oneness.

Blue necked - Deva asura chriend the milky ocean with mandara as rod and vasuki as the volnteered rope.

Vasuki - Tired and stressed, vomits, siva takes the lava of poison in hand, terrible, could not throw it, so he drank. uma presses neck which gets blue.

In our life, our sativk quality is the mily ocean, intelelct is the mandira, lower ego and higher ego are the asuras and devas, the ego itself being vasuki.

In advanced state of meditation, all ego, in unconscious and subconscious mind, the vasanas must be vomited before we get the amrita, realization / jnana.

The ego should neither posion the head (intellect) nor the heart (mind) of the meditator; hence it is in between the head and heart, symbolically... in the neck.

When the purusa is no more expressing through prakriti, when the ego is removed, the highest attainment - prashantam / peace / bliss is reached.

Thus, the muni reaches the source of all the manifested world, bhuta yoni, which is the eternal self!!.

Samastha Sakshim -  sun and world of activities. Without sunshine, no world activity is possible, but sin shine does not have any relation / concern with any activity in world, nor is it responsible.

Spirit is the witness, matter draws its energy from spirit (jagat karana, jagat adhishtana), but the purusa is not responsible or concerned with any acitivites of the world which has drawn its stength from the prakriti.....

No doubt by a waker after waking up...beyond darkness... no doubt about the reality of his experience after he is awakened to the god consciousness... the consciousness of paramesvara!!!

PARAMESWARA in Macrocosm ( The creation)
  • When we take the creation aspect, by Easwara we understand in gross level as God with form- Rama/Krishna/Shiva/Sai etc.
  • When we get a little deeper, we understand that Shrutis explain Easwara as the Unmanifest God who willed and  created this creation through  his powers which is Shakti or powers.
  • When we go a little deeper, then, the Prefix Parama is added to Easwara and Parameswara is understood as the Essence, pure consciousness beyond manifest and unmanifest which existed prior to the creation.
PARAMESWARA in Microcosm. ( The individual Jiva)
  • We are the spirit (the flute as explained above, the matter )and God or the Parsmeswara is the Spirit ( The flutist as explained above.
  • The Parameswara  is not outside us but we ourselves are both the spirit and the matter.
  • Whether we are awake or dreaming or in deep sleep, the Parameswara or the spirit within us is the eternal witness to all out state.
  • At experience level, we experience Easwara as pure consciousness or Bliss or Satchitananda . We can say this is Easwara, as for as our subjective experience is concerned.
  • When we  transcend this experience also and get beyond the awareness of this experience, then, similar to the last stage or the subtlest stage explained in creation/ macrocosm level above, we also transcend all possible experience in meditation and we exist as beyond manifest and unmanifest, beyond all experience, beyond satchitananda.
  • At this state, we also exist as Parameswara
IT IS AT THIS STATE THAT  SWAMI SAYS " YOU AND ME ARE ONE"!!!!

This requires a lot of in depth contemplation and absorption!!!!!

Love
